Art 110 Section 3 - Special Photo Projects!

Here's your chance to look at some art and then have the experience of recreating its qualities. Here are 4 paintings that you can reproduce as photos "starring" students from Art 110. You should go to the museum, study the painting and take a "reference" photo of it (photos are allowed for all 4 of these paintings) Of course it'd be fun to snap a photo of yourself with the painting, although this isn't required. Then your EC mission, should you choose to accept it, is to recreate the painting in a photo starring your classmates. Here are the 4 paintings and the websites of the museums where you'll find them:

The Mocking of Christ

The Mocking of Christ and Magdalen with the Smoking Flame are all about lighting. Mary Magdalene sits at a desk with a big candle illuminating her face and dress. Christ and the other men huddle around a torch flame. This should be a really fun project for you to see what you can do trying to recreate something like this lighting.

The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis is all about... well, "acting!" It's about finding that dreamy melancholy space that our mythological hero and heroine occupy as they leave each other. Acting and a bit of radiant clothing. Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse is about big hair, a big dress and the fabulous and famous 18th century actress Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse with the shadowy figures of Pity and Terror behind either of her shoulders.

To do a truly first rate job on these would be quite a project, but I'll gladly give EC to any serious attempt to get in the zone of the paintings. You should try (without going too nuts) to recreate the look, feel, lighting, etc of the paintings. A great idea once your photo is set up is to take one great "for real" photo... with that "in the can" you can play around and take whatever other fun images you're inclined to. One area where I will give you free choice is in the gender of your "actors." Any Art 110 student male or female can be any of the characters in any of these paintings. You might choose to change gender from the original to make some sort of creative statement, or you might change genders just for practical reasons like The Mocking of Christ has 6 males and your group is 3 males and 3 females.

ONLY - ONLY - ONLY - FOR *** THESE 4 *** PROJECTS: Each person does NOT have to separately submit photos. One person can submit for the entire group. For Magdalene, Telemachus, and Siddons, I'll give EC to the cast and up to 1 additional student. For Christ I'll give EC to the cast and up to 2 additional students. Each serious attempt to create the image will be worth... well... if you submit your images by April 30, they'll be worth 18 points per person... if you submit them by May 11 they'll be worth 15 points per person. And, as with all EC, nothing will be accepted after May 11. Use our normal naming convention for your photos:
Zucman_Glenn-Telemachus1.jpg
Zucman_Glenn-Christ1.jpg
Zucman_Glenn-Magdalene1.jpg
Zucman_Glenn-Siddons1.jpg

Use the name of the person who plays Christ / Siddons / Magdalene... and either the name of the person who plays Telemachus or Eucharis.
Be sure to use the links above to submit your photos. You don't have to write anything in the email, just the names of the "cast" and up to 1 extra person (2 for Christ) who worked on the photo and will receive EC.

Have fun! This should be a great opportunity for you TO LOOK... TO SEE... TO CREATE... and, of course, TO HAVE FUN!
