(Place in the c:\temp directory on the local disk. Use WinZIP to extract
the TIGER files.
The TIGER files for this exercise are a portion
of the County of Los Angeles, California. The subset "window" includes
all TIGER lines in and around the City of Lakewood, CA -- a small city
in the Greater Los Angeles Region which borders the City of Long Beach
on the North. The Long Beach Airport is in the SW corner of the map area.

To
Convert the TIGER to an Arc/Info Coverage

Run ARC
-
use the command: TIGERARC Lakexll.F5 new_cover_name to import the
line features.

use the command: BUILD cover_name LINES to build line topology for
the coverage.

Run ArcView and ADD the coverage to the View.

From the Project Window, ADD the TABLE named "cover_name.ACODE" to the
project (Note: it is an INFO file).

Find the corresponding TIGER_Line_ID fields in the two tables and Link
the "ACODE" file with the attribute file.

Use the Query Tools in ArcView to select all Streets in Lakewood.
Use the CFCC (Census Feature Classification Code) and FIPS_Place_Left
and Right fields to select ROADS (code "A") that are a part of the City
of Lakewood (Place number 39892).

Use the THEME/Convert_to_Shapefile option to save the selected
records into an ArcView Shapefile format.

Make a Basemap using the Lakewood Streets shapefile.
