Video Orientations for Course and Exercises

Download Windows Media Player 11 WMPlogo.jpg - 5700 Bytes

You must have the Windows Media Player installed, working, and set as your default player for .wmv files (usually is) to run these videos. It normally is installed in your computer when you buy it. The newest update version is a free download.

Important note: These Orientation Videos were designed for online delivery and submission.
In a laboratory setting, pressing the Submit button will evoke a box, not another WWW page directing you to a Dropbox. Choose Run from the Windows warning displays.
All you do is select the Report and Copy, then use the Paste and Print bottons in the box to first display, then print to the network printer in your lab and submit to your instructor that session. Review your Report again for errors and omissions first. The Save button requires a floppy inserted, or a error event will occur, and the box will close. All Reports are called report.txt, so you must rename each to save for yourself. Review reads and displays the floppy contents.
This is how It works on the CD included in the text and in a laboratory setting.
The Introduction is a little different too.
Ignore any references to "Seaport", unless you are a Coastline College student.

These appear to stream if this page is accessed from IE, yet download if you use Firefox. Streaming seems faster. They run smoothly either way.

Course Orientation Introduction wmv (Run Media Player as full screen unless you get an error, *then do not run full screen. Controls on right-click.)
*Note: This can be a problem with Vista. These orientation videos should all run full screen. If not, have Windows search for and install an updated video driver. Do it from Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Distance to Pleiades wmv (Run Media Player as full screen. Controls on right-click.)
Errata: I misspoke, significantly, twice in the Pleiades coverage. Correct statements:
Difference of one magnitude = fifth root of 100.
Temperature increases toward the left on the horizontal axis in a color-magnitude diagram.

Age and Distance of galactic Clusters wmv (Run same settings as previous sections for this and all that follow.)
Erratum: I did it again in the DQ's. Correct statement: "...cluster a is the closest..."

Sidereal Day wmv

Note: these all appear to stream on IE. I'm not sure yet with Firefox. Download the newest version. It's free.

Star Charts 1 wmv

Star Charts 2 wmv
Errata: I stated hours at one point in reading declination instead of degrees.
I used the word, "sun" at one point instead of "sidereal time". Did you catch that?
I failed to end the video at the correct point at the very end. Please excuse that. I'll have to pick up where I left off.

Star Charts 3 wmv
Missing Starchart Image jpg (revised)
See missing coverage of UT and local time here.
Errata: I think I misspoke on some dates in planisphere discussion.

Note: these are very large files, so you need a high-speed connection, not dial-up. Computer speed is not as important.
It takes a while for these files to download or buffer. Be patient.
The wmv W M Player shows the buffering progress as it streams, so you know it's working. Just use the right mouse button to first run Full Screen, then to stop, pause, etc.

Close tabs and/or players you will not use again this session to conserve resources.
