Computer spielen heute eine dominante Rolle in unserer sozialen und ökonomischen Umgebung. Computer realisieren bestimmte Funktionen effizienter als ein Mensch. Nur Spezialisten kennen aber die Prinzipien ihrer Konstruktion und Funktion. Hier ist eine Einführung.
Der Computer als eine Maschine zur Verarbeitung von Symbolen nach Regeln oder Programmierungen hat als zentrale Komponenten die Zentraleinheit und den Kernspeicher, der die Bytes enthält. Bei großen Computern beträgt die Zahl der Bytes virtuell mehr als eine Million. Bei modernen Computern hat sich die Verarbeitungszeit auf weniger als ein Millionstel einer Sekunde reduziert. Die für die Funktion eines Computers notwendige Ausrüstung gliedert sich in zwei Sektionen: Die Hardware als fest etablierte maschinelle Ausrüstung mit Eingabewerk, Addierwerk, logarithmischer Funktion etc., und die Software. Die Software umfasst die zum Computersystem gehörenden Programme, die Operations anweisungen geben.
