For a first glance orientation
look at what is standing around the pure text — are there graphs, images or other texts related to this one?

 

Don't start immediatly with the first word of the text.
Look at the context of the text and interpret the following information:

Title
Recognizing and understanding the titles and subtitles of a text can serve as a short summary of the content.		  

Images
They may present more, less, or the same information as the text. In any case, use them to help you.

  
Graphs
Examine the graph first and then try to understand the information conveyed about the text.
