In German we have the personal pronouns shown in the table below.

The most important personal pronouns in the context of this reading course are the third-person pronouns because most texts you'll be dealing with use only these pronouns.

The third-person singular personal pronoun reflects the grammatical, though not necessarily the biological, gender of the noun it replaces.

Remember that when you see a third-person feminine or masculine pronoun, it can also refer to an object!


Wie hat der Plan (m) für die Strukturreform funktioniert?
Er hat gut funktioniert.

How did the plan for the structural reform function?
It functioned well.

Wo ist die Bank (f)?
Sie ist in der Hauptstraße.

Where is the bank?
It is in the main street.

Wie heißt das Passwort (n) für das Programm?
Es heißt "kreativ".

What is the password for the program?
It is "creative."
