GRAMMAR 6

  THE SKELETON SENTENCE— Part 1

sein + haben
grammar books

Predicates formed by a verb group often consist of an auxiliary verb and ...

  • ... a noun (Er ist Ingenieur),
  • ... an adjective (Sie ist intelligent), or
  • ... another verb (Wir haben gegessen).

The two most common auxiliary verbs are sein (to be) and haben (to have).

Like in English, they are highly irregular. Because they are so irregular, you should memorize their forms and the English equivalents. The most frequently used and therefore the most important forms for reading purposes will be the third person forms.

Like in English, the verbs sein + haben can also form a predicate on their own (Sie hat 3 Häuser.).
