ACTIVITY 2

  2a)

Activate your knowledge about the German film. This activity is not a knowledge testing acticity but a prereading activity to activate the knowledge you have. Thus, it is not about right or wrong. If you absolutely want to know if one of your answers is correct, you have of course the chance to send an e-mail to your tutor.
Do you know any German film makers?

What was the last German film you saw in the cinema or in TV?

Do you know any German film which is actually shown (perhaps you also know the name of the film maker)?

  2b)

(1) Film in Deutschland

In most of the text, you will understand more or less easily some parts and will have more difficulties with others. Sometimes you will meet complexe grammatical structures which hinder your understanding. In such a case, you have to use an intensive style of reading and really focus on these structures. The fact which will helo very much is that you have already learnt a lot of grammar which can help you to analyse complexe structures.

We will now focus on some grammatical structures of the text. Try to analyse them to understand the relations between the different elements.

First, identify the subject and the predicate in every of the following sentences.

(Same question as in last chapter: any chance to realize that on the same text? subjects in red (or different color) , predicate in a blue (or different), student has to click on every single word.

When you have done that, click on the "Question" button and answer the question to every sentence.(Question should be hidden first)

(3) In den letzten Jahren tauchen neue Namen im deutschen Film auf.

Identify the conjugated verb form "tauchen auf":

Person: (first, second, third; third is correct)

Numerus: (singular, plural; plural is correct)

Tense: (present tense, past tense; present tense is correct)

(6) Sie suchen neue, realitätsnahe Geschichten und erzählen sie auf eine neue Weise.

You might have thought that the second "sie" is the subject of the predicate "erzählen" - and you have gotten a negative feedback. It's true, that that's a tricky one. Since the subject of the "erzählen" is indeed a "sie" - the same "sie" which is the subject of the first predicate. It could have been repeated but normally it isn't since language aim to be as economical as possible.

So the "sie" standing behind the conjugated verb form has to have a different meaning. You could guess it if you translate the sentence into English...

"sie" means here: (blank, show answer button: them)

(11) Nur Werner Herzog, Volker Schlöndorff und Wim Wenders legen in unregelmäßigen Abständen neue Filme vor.

Could you guess the meaning of "vorlegen" with the help of the context? (blank, show answer: to present)

(16) Diese sind mit amerikanischer Unterhaltungsware verstopft wie (fast) überall auf der Welt.

"Diese" is a demonstrative pronoun and is referring to the "real" subject which was mentioned somewhere before. To what word/phrase is the "diese" referring? (blank, show answer: (die) Kinos)

(19) Wie kritisch die Situation auf dem Medien-Markt ist, zeigen der Zusammenbruch des ambitionierten Verleihs Kinowelt und von KirchMedia.

You know about the congruency between subject and conjugated verb form. Could you explain why "zeigen" is in the plural form? (blank, show answer: It is in the plural form because the subject is first the breakdown of the distributor "Kinowelt" and second the breakdown of the KirchMedia - i.e. two breakdowns.)
