BOOK ABSTRACT
"Social Theatricalities, National Identities and Historic Memory: Rituals of Purification and Reconciliation" proposes the study of social theatricalities as a new area of theatre research. This book is devoted to exploring the theatrical constructions of national identity and history and their interrelationships among theatre, ritual and popular culture, vis-à-vis, both the Chilean Canto Libre (Song of Freedom), [a theatrical event held in the Chile Stadium, the site of mass tortures and executions, as an act of cleansing and purification organized by a diverse group of artists and traditional countryside musicians, Mapuche Indian groups and folkloric dancers] and the political funerals of Salvador Allende and Pinochet's advisor, Senator Jaime Guzmán. These rituals used dramatic strategies and appropriated recognizable signs of the culture to articulate visually diverse interpretations of Chile's recent socio-political history.
