Ciliated Renal Cell (a) Low power micrograph showing the general ultrastructural features of the ciliated cell of the renal epithelium. The cell has a well developed microvillus border and has numerous peripheral cilia which are attached into the apical cytoplasm by basal bodies and ciliary rootlets. The apical cytoplasm is vesiculated whilst in the mid and basal regions of the cell there are numerous membrane delineated vacuoles containing electron dense material. The nucleus is prominent and lies in the mid region of the cell. bb = basal body ci = cilia eb = electron dense body gb = Golgi body lu = lumen of kidney sac mi = mitochondria mv = microvilli n = nephrocyte nu = nucleus v = vesicles
