Description

Being captured by the savages Captain Smith showed them his compass at which they stood dazed with admiration, and rather than kill him there, took him to Powhatan, their emperor. Here, more than two hundred grim courtiers stood wondering at him as if he was a monster. Powhatan sat before the fire on a bedstead covered with a great robe of raccoon skins with the tails hanging down. On either side of him sat a young wench of sixteen or eighteen years, and along each side of the house, two rows of men with as many women behind them. At Captain Smith's entrance, all the people gave a great shout. The Queen of Appamatuck brought him water to wash his hands and another a bunch of feathers instead of a towel. Later, they held a consultation. Then two great stones were placed before Powhatan, and Captain Smith was dragged to them and made to place his head upon them, while the men stood by with their clubs to beat out his brains. Then, when no entreaty could prevail, Pocohontas, the King's daughter, got his head in her arms, and laid her own upon his. Whereat the King contented that he should live.
