In painting, there is always a language, a vocabulary, or an alphabet of information which the artist will use to communicate. Whether this applies to traditional academic painting, or purely abstract content, the one factor that always unifies disparate elements is this "vocabulary."

Sometimes these unifying elements can blur the line between abstract and representational painting, because in both, formal elements -- line, color, composition and texture -- must be used.
