Project 6 Resonator Design Project

By: Dr. Fei Wang          (Due May 13 in class)

In this project, you will practice designing a Microstrip line resonator that resonate at 15GHz. Use the following substrate parameters.

Dielectric constant (ε): 12

Tangent (δ): 0.001

Substrate thickness: 15 mil

Metal line thickness: 0.15 mil

Conductivity:

Choose a coupling gap of 5 um to start your design.

HINT: you can used LinCalc to synthesize a W and L value to start with, and use tuning function of ADS to fine tune it.

1)      Design an open-circuited l/2 resonator with one coupling gap, determine the width and length of the Microstrip line. Simulate and tune in ADS. Also measure the 3-dB bandwidth of your design.

2)      Based on the optimized design above, Tune the gap from 1 to 100 um using tuning function in ADS, comments how the resonant frequency changes with the gap.

3)      Design a short-circuited l/4 resonator with one couple gap, determine the width and length of Microstrip Line. Simulate and tune in ADS. Also measure the 3-dB bandwidth of your design.

4)      Try momentum simulation tools in ADS.

1.      Take the design in step 1. Add port in input and output end.

2.      Generate layout (layout-> generate/update layout), then choose ok. Layout will be generated for your design.

3.      Do Momentum simulation (momentum->simulation->S Parameter), set appropriate frequency range. And simulate.

Simulation result will pop up after it ends. Compare result with your schematic simulation, any difference?
