Project 5 Design a Microwave Amplifier

Dr. Fei Wang                (Due Apr 27 in class)

Design Objectives:

The objectives of the amplifier design are summarized as below:

Center Frequency: TBD

Bandwidth: 10%

Substrate Material: Alumina (εr=9.5-10, we pick 9.75)

Substrate Thickness: 50 mills

Transistor: TBD (Picked from NEC transistor library in ADS package)

Design using maximum gain approach.

HINT:

To design using maximum gain approach, the two-port network, i.e. transistor amplifier, need to be unconditionally stable. Therefore, you should first design a biasing network for the given transistor and test its stability over a range of frequency around center frequency. After stability condition is reached, use maximum gain approach to determine Gs and GL for matching network design. (Some simulation probes under S Parameter Simulation pallet may be useful to save some hand calculation, use ADS help to find out more.)

Matching network need to be figured out using smith chart manually. But ADS Line Calc can be used to calculate the length and width of transmission line in mm.

Report Requirements

·         Show all related the simulation results and organize your report follows the design procedure.

·         Use ADS’s optimization gear to optimize your design in bandwidth, the goal is to flatten the gain in the bandwidth. Compare your optimized simulation with original one.
