Project 3 Input impedance of TL—Microstrip Line

Dr. Fei Wang              (Due Mar 9 in class)

Objective:

Get familiar with LineCalc function in ADS package.

Procedure

Repeat project 2 using Mstrip Line instead of ideal transmission line. In order to use Mstrip, substrate need to be defined. See figure below.

Substrate Information:

Er=12

TanD=0.001

Substrate thickness: 15mil

Conductor thickness: 0.15mil

Use default value for other parameters.

Use LineCalc (located under tools) to figure out the width and length of Micro-strip line, whose characteristic impedance is 50Ohm and effective angle (E_eff) is 90 degree. (make calculation at 5GHz)

Simulate Zin for both open and short load just as you did in project 2.

Using LineCalc

LineCalc (example shown below) is a very useful tool provided by ADS. Using linecalc, we can easily analyze a variety of transmission line based on their dimension (Analyze Button). Moreover, we can design transmission lines based on requirements on characteristic impedance and effective angle (Synthesis Button).

Report Requirements:

Only turn in the following screen shots. (No complete report needed for this project)

  1. Schematic of you design.
  2. Screen shot of Linecalc showing correct physical dimention of Mtrip line.
  3. Zin (mag and phase) of open load.
  4. Zin (mag and phase) of short load.
