What is a Citation?
  • Citation is the basic information needed to find the source or cite it. Indexes & research databases will always give you a citation.


  • Journal citations include the following information:
  • Author (s) of the article
  • Title of the article
  • Journal/Periodical Title
  • Volume/Issue information
  • Date (Year)
  • Pages

How to find sources

Finding Citations

  • Step 1: Keywords or search terms for topic


  • Step 2: Select Database


  • Step 3: Search the database
    • Try different keywords, try different searches
    • Select the best citations
    • Look at more than one page of results!

How to combine terms
Create search statements using Boolean operators
  • AND narrows a search.
    • Both variables must appear in same citation.
    • Terms have different meanings.
      • example:  breast cancer AND prevention

  • OR broadens a search.
    • Either term may appear in citation.
    • Terms have similar meanings.
      • example:  heart attacks or myocardial infarctions

  • Advanced Search Hints
    • Field Searching (helps narrow your topic)
      • Select field from pull down menu (i.e. Title, Subject, Author)
    • Truncation
      • Add truncation symbol (e.g.,*,!, ?,#, +) to root of word
      • diabet* searches for diabetes, diabetic

    • Use Illiad InterLibrary Loan online form to request articles, books, thesis, etc. - fill out form with citation information.
    • Fill out Online Form and generally receive articles electronically in 5 to 10 days.
