Which tool?
  • What kind of information “source” do you need?
  • Journal articles, newspaper articles, magazine articles…use Databases
  • Books, encyclopedias…use COAST library catalog
  • Websites…use Research Guides and Search engines

6
Where to find the tools?
7
Getting Started…
  • Figure out your topic
    • Turn your topic into a statement or a question
    • Write down terms that relate to your subject
    • Determine vocabulary that may be used in COAST or Research Databases

8
Identify topic keywords:
subject headings & synonyms
  • Note: You do NOT have to search for every word in your research question.
  • Do nursing students have more stress than other students?
  •   A B               C
9
Create Search Statement

  • Boolean operators provide a way to express the logical relationships between concepts.

  • Do not use common words such as if, an, in, the, a, but, of, as, it, etc.

  • AND narrows a search
    • Use to combine two different concepts
    • Both terms must be in the database record

  • OR broadens a search
    • Use to combine the same concept (synonyms)
    • Either term must be in the database record

  • Need Help? Try the Keyword Builder
10
Search Statement (continued)
  • Truncation symbols or wildcards or plural searching  examples: *, #, !, ?, +

  • Truncation allows you to search for terms with multiple endings, including plurals,
  • e.g. stress* for stress or stressful or stressed
  • Wildcard takes the place of one character, like freshm#n (for freshmen or freshman)

  • “Quotation marks” to make words appear right next to each other or to search for phrases
  • e.g. “nursing student*”

  • NOTE: Not all databases use the same format for searching- so check the examples and help screens!!

11

Search Statement (continued) Combining terms
12
Using a database
  • Step 1: Click on Find Articles. Select database.
  • Step 2: Use keywords and search statement
    • Try to narrow down results to 50-100 citations. Select the best.
    • Print, email, save citations
    • Change your search if not getting good results
      • Too many? Narrow search by adding keywords, more specific terms, limit search to title field
      • Not enough? Broaden search by using fewer keywords, use terms that are more general
13
Finding Full Text
  • Step 3: Select best citations
  • Step 4: Find full text
  • Is full text available for your citation in the database?
    • Yes, click                         or                          or

    • Try, Click SFX button

    • Note: If a database does not have an SFX button you can manually search COAST, using journals.
