3	Steps of the research process Start with your topic What are the main issues? Write down terms that relate to your subject, including synonyms Figure out where to look for resources What kinds of information do you need? Where is that information available?
4	Identify Keywords & Synonyms Concept 1 lung cancer lung neoplasms
5	Boolean operators AND narrows a search. Both variables must appear in same citation. Terms have different meanings. example: “lung cancer AND smoking” OR broadens a search. Either term may appear in citation. Terms have similar meanings. example: “lung OR pulmonary” NOT eliminates terms.
6	Truncation symbols examples: , #, !, ?, + allows you to search for terms with multiple endings, including plurals e.g., prevent for prevent or prevention or preventing or prevented or prevents
7	Quotation Marks “ ” make words appear right next to each other or to search for phrases e.g. “patient education” NOTE: Not all databases use the same format for searching- so check the examples and help screens!!
8	Getting the article Is the article available for your citation in the database? Yes, Try, SFX button

10	Article… Note: If a database (i.e., PubMed) does not have an SFX button or you already have a citation you can “manually” search COAST, using journals.
11	COAST screen for a journal that is physically in the Library
12	Illiad (Do you need materials NOT available at CSULB?) If we don’t have it…we will get it Use Illiad InterLibrary Loan online form to request journal article, book chapter, book, thesis, etc. - fill out form with citation information. Fill out Online Form and generally receive articles electronically in 5 to 10 days. FREE! Need ID number and Library PIN/ Password to request.
