Lots and Lots of Information

  • November 2000, there were 26,161,187 web pages … by November 2004, there were 44,158,128 web pages.


  • In 2002, it was reported that five exabytes of information were generated … the equivalent of a half-million new libraries the size of the Library of Congress … the largest library in the world with nearly 128 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves.

Why the Library?
  • Libraries organize information


  • Appropriate information for class assignments


  • Proprietary information not always available on the Internet (e.g., Google or Yahoo) for free
    • Billion dollar industry
    • Library pays $$$$ for access to databases and print & electronic journals for you!

  • Develop topic & research question
  • Hint: Find out if the database has specific headings that might better define your topic. Most databases have  a subject thesaurus or controlled vocabulary (like MeSH for MEDLINE).

  • Do not use common words (the, of, a, to, in, is, you, that, it) in your search…or you could get “funny” results!

Finding Journal Articles
  • Step 1: Select keywords or search terms
  • Step 2: Select Database
  • Step 3: Search the database
    • Try different keywords, try different searches
    • Select the best citations
    • Look at more than one page of results!


  • Advanced Search Hints
    • Field Searching
      • Select field from pull down menu (i.e. Title field)
    • Truncation
      • Add truncation symbol (e.g.,*,!, ?,#, +) to root of word
      • teen* searches for teen, teens, teenage

    • Use Illiad InterLibrary Loan to request journal article, book chapter, book, conference proceedings, thesis, dissertations, etc.
    • Fill out Online Form with citation information and generally receive electronically in 5 to 10 days.

  • Use a style to format your citations  (references/bibliography), i.e., APA
