Getting Started…
  • Figure out your topic
    • Turn your topic into a statement/question
    • Write down terms that relate to your subject
    • Determine vocabulary that may be used in COAST or Research Databases

  • Develop topic & research question
  • Hint: Find out if the database has specific subject headings that fit your topic. Most databases have subject headings or thesaurus (Mesh for Medline & PubMed)

Identify Keywords and Synonyms

Boolean Operators
  • Do not use common words such as if, an, in, the, a, but, of, as, it, etc.
  • AND narrows a search
    • Use to combine two different concepts
    • Both terms must be in the database record


  • OR broadens a search
    • Use to combine the same concept (synonyms)
    • Either term must be in the database record

  • allows you to search for terms with multiple endings, including plurals

Quotation Marks “ ”
  • make words appear right next to each other or to search for phrases
  • e.g. “patient education”



  • NOTE: Not all databases use the same format for searching- so check the examples and help screens!!

    • Pre-CINAHL (A companion database to CINAHL, new journal citations)
  • Cochrane Library (evidence-based systematic reviews)

    • Use Illiad InterLibrary Loan online form to request journal article, book chapter, book, thesis, etc. - fill out form with citation information.
    • Fill out Online Form and generally receive articles electronically in 5 to 10 days.
    • FREE!
    • Need ID number
      and Library PIN
      to request.
