KPE 237 - Techniques and Analysis of Aquatic Skills Catalog Description:
Instruction and techniques in individual aquatic skills, hydrodynamic and movement principles, and an exposure to a variety of learning procedures applicable to the development of aquatic skills. Traditional grading only. (Lecture 1 hour, Activity 3 hours).
Expanded Description:
This course is aimed at preparing future physical educators to teach aquatic based activities. The main focus of the course is developing the pre-service teacher's ability to demonstrate, teach, and analyze five fundamental swimming strokes (Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke, & Side Stroke). Additional components of the course include; Hydrodynamic Principles, Teaching Progressions, Block Plans, Lesson Plans, Class Organization, Motor Learning Theory, Diving, Turns, Diversity, Practice Teaching, Infant & Preschool Programs, Stroke Evaluation Analysis and Refinement, Teaching Progressions for Safety & Rescue Skills, Fitness Principles, Basic & Emergency Water Safety Skills.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- 1. Apply fundamental water and personal water safety procedures to the teaching of aquatics.
- 2. Explain the use of effective hydrodynamic principles as they apply to the teaching of swimming in physical education settings.
- 3. Plan swimming and water safety courses for physical education settings.
- 4. Illustrate how hydrodynamic principles are used in teaching aquatics
- 5. Apply motor learning theories to teaching swimming in physical education settings
- 6. Analyze Basic Aquatic Skills
- 7. Demonstrate 5 swimming strokes ARC intermediate level
- 8. Analyze 5 basic swimming strokes
- 9. Analyze efficient diving skills
- 10. Develop a resource of information related to: the analysis of swimming skills; learning and developing performance; and organizational problems
- 11. Identify basic safety guidelines for diving as they apply to teaching aquatics in the physical education setting
- 12. Describe the health benefits of fitness swimming
- 13. Outline historical development of swimming
- 14. Examine unique differences that exist among diverse populations and how that affect one's participation in swimming.
- 15. Develop strategies to customize courses to meet participants' needs

In the Kinesiology and Physical Education Department, we expect a lot from our students. Performance of the student has been at the highest level.
B
80.00 -89.99
Performance of the student has been at a high level.
C
70.00 - 79.99
Performance of the student has been at an adequate level, meeting the basic requirements of the course.
D
60.00 - 69.99
Performance of the student has been less than adequate.
F
0.00 - 59.99
Performance of the student has been such that minimal course requirements have not been met.
Incomplete policy
