Ideas for Working with the Internet, as Related to Social Studies

  1. Building Data Bases

Use the WWW to develop historical, geographical, political science, economic, sociological, and anthropological data bases. An example would be Geography - regions and their similarities and differences - the weather, climate, flora, fauna, etc. Another idea is to link geography with history and science - the geographical, both cultural and physical, environments that may have been responsible for inventors' various discoveries.

Data bases provide students with opportunities to record their information in a frame work that can be utilized by other students/adults at a later date.

  2. ListServs

Through your Internet-e-mail, join a ListServ in order to correspond with other social studies educators. A good start is the ListServ of the National Council for the Social Studies: ncss-l@bgu.edu

Another ListServ is Discovery Channel School, an online mailing list that sends weekly programming updates. To join, send E-mail message to listserv@lists.discovery.com ; in the body of the message put only "subscribe DSC-LITE Firstname Lastname" (without the quotes). The subject of the message can be left blank or put "no subject".

  3. "Pen Pals" via e-mail

Check Electronic Pals in the list above.

  4. Software

A software package that can be purchased for about $15 per station called "Around the World"quizzes players on geography of landforms, capitals, products of nations around the world. It is great for a once-a-month quiz/fun day. The room sounds like a casino if the sound effects are on.

A sample can be downloaded at the website: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/torpedo

  5. Working With Web Pages

Build World Wild Web pages around themes. One anthropological/ sociological web site that students can create is one that focuses on their home town.

This type of page allows them to record and document the ecology (rules, regulations, structures) and culture (philosophies, attitudes, traditions) of the environment that influenced them. We then look at the unique customs that arise in each geographic area. It is amazing how many people followed similar customs (ex. the tooth fairy or and celebrations of thanksgiving) but with a unique "home town" twist that was linked to their indigenous region.

Once you are on the World Wide Web, run a search on "Social Studies". You will then have an opportunity to select sites that meet your specific needs.

The following are several sites (pages) which have been recommended by other teachers:

a. One excellent web site to start with is that of the National Council for the Social Studies. It will provide you many links to other sites.
http://www.ncss.org/home/ncss

b. Check out the Third Millenium's web site for an on-line meter that is running, indicating the ballooning national debt. Students can take the quiz on how federal money is spent and visit related government links.
http://ecedweb.unomaha.edu/teach.htm

c. Also, for a Global Grocery List, point your browser to: http://www.wimmera.net.au/gsl/gslintro.html
WimmeraNet's Global Grocery Project allows students and teachers to submit a shopping list via the WWW. Participants will automatically receive a receipt detailing exchange rates, total costs, etc. of their shopping list; prices will be viewable and allow immediate comparison of entries from around the world. Shopping lists can be sorted (e.g. cost/country), and links are automatically created to participating schools' home page. (While you're visiting the site, have a look at what $5.00 Australian is worth.)

d. Students can participate in simulation activities, such as those modeled on the Arab-Israeli conflict, virtual field trips across Europe and Asia and to the North Pole - via the following site:

http://ics.sor.umich.edu/ICS/ICS.html
Interact (role-playing and simulations catalog): http://www.inter-cat.com/~jason

e. Classroom Connections with Other Countries: http://www.stolaf.edu/network/iecc/

f. Collaboration with students for contributions to the welfare of the planet and its people: http://www.igc.apc.org/iearn/

g. Locate the sites for foreign countries' individual embassy homepages. In most cases, you will receive wonderful information and if you ask - a flag.

h. Establish "Embassies" and information banks with 2 - 4 computers as country-based or theme-based information banks. Students are then instructed to:

i. The following web site is a classified, annotated list of over 1200 links to help teachers enhance curriculum and expand their professional growth. It also includes slide shows dealing with content-rich home pages, information about directories vs. search engines, and WebQuests, a model for classroom Internet integration. There is also a set of evaluation tools to help students evaluate web sites.
