DEPT Department of Geography CSULB
The 3rd Annual Geography Awareness Photo Contest

Winners 2005
BEST OVERALL
Matt Ebiner  "Pinnacles Desert, Western Australia"
Nambung National Park, Western Australia 2005   Minolta XTSi
These bizarre limestone pinnacles were originally formed below the sand and gradually exposed through wind erosion.

FLORA AND FAUNA
Jessica Caric "Fish in the Sky"
Croatia 2005   Casio 4 MP/Digital
"Fish in the Sky" is that it looks like the fish are actually in the sky since the water is such an interesting color blue along with the plant life in the water framing the fish.

URBAN LANDSCAPE
Nathaniel Fu   "Grass and Stones"
The Getty Museum, California 2005   Canon Rebel 300d, 17-85 IS USM EFS lens
This shows the merging of grass and stones together to create a single landscape.

PEOPLE/CULTURE
Ian Boles   "Calligraphy"
Beijing, China 2005   Canon S501
The geographical significance of "Calligraphy" is purely cultural, in my opinion.  Chinese calligraphy is as much an art form as it is a form of communication.  I feel lucky to have captured such a beautiful example of it.

RURAL LANDSCAPE
Judith Tyner   "Desert Raindrops"
Joshua Tree National Park, Barker Dam 2005   Nikon CoolPix S1 5MP
When rains in the desert are vital for survival.

PHYSICAL LANDSCAPE
Matt Ebiner  "Pinnacles Desert, Western Australia"
Nambung National Park, Western Australia 2005   Minolta XTSi
These bizarre limestone pinnacles were originally formed below the sand and gradually exposed through wind erosion.

GEOGRAPHY IN ACTION
Jeff Overbeek "On Top of the World"
Big Bear Mountains, California 2005   FUJI FinePIX E550
It was surprising that from our mountain top on a hot July afternoon, we could see snow across the valley.

MIGRATION (FLOATING CATEGORY)
Matt Ebiner  "A Face of Untold Hardships"
Peshawar, Pakistan 1993   Olympus OM2S
This Afghan refugee in a Pakistani refugee camp had a haunted _expression which reflected the struggles faced by him and his compatriots, members of the world's largest refugee group due to the wars in his country.

Congratulations!  Thanks to everyone who participated either by submitting photos or by attending and voting!  Start thinking about the next year's contest!
