          Village
The Best Image across all categories
1st place, People/Culture

Noel Ludwig, Girl in Village    (Kali Gandaki Valley, Nepal 1988)
Villages in this valley occupy the few relatively flat terraces left behind when the Kali Gandaki River cut down through its floodplain.  Unfortunately, this valley -- the deepest in the world -- is subject to a cocktail of floods, earthquakes and landslides.  This requires neighboring villages to continuously cooperate to maintain and rebuild the valley's fragile trail, visible in the foreground and as a faint sliver rising up the sheer cliff in the center background.
