Pagliacci – Central City
Opera, 2003
The first
production of a double-bill with Goyescas, Pagliacci introduced the
audience into the world of the ghosts of the theatre, and their
telling of this tragic story of love and uncontrolled passion.
Peter Harrison’s
stage design recreated the back stage environment of the
theatre, with doors and windows magically opening to reveal the
world of the play. Linking the stark stylistic approach to Goyescas, Director
David Edwards and I incorporated bold color choices and lighting
angles to express the theatricality of the story. We returned to
stark realism for the final play within a play with an atmosphere
of a realistic kitchen with a single practical light bulb--all
to intensify the contrast of reality and theatre.
