History 611-Research in Ancient History-Spring, 2011-Hood

This semester students in History 611 will research the differing Roman and Greek perceptions of Carthage. The chief Latin source is Livy, who wrote in the Augustan Age; the chief Greek source is Polybius, who wrote in the Second Century B.C. Although their respective views of Hannibal have been well researched, their varying views of Carthage per se have not been research on for some time.

How did the Greeks regard Carthage before the Punic Wars clouded their vision and biased them either for or against Rome? Did their opinions of the Tyrian colony vary depending on the age in which they wrote, their bias with regard to Rome, and the audiences for which the historians were writing?
