HISTORY 499—SENIOR SEMINAR—READINGS IN ANCIENT HISTORY

Monday, 1830-2115--Spring, 2012

This class will read approximately half a paperback a week. Grades will be based on discussion performance, your portfolio, an oral presentation, and a historiographical research paper of 15-20 pages.

Since we will be discussing the various ways in which the different authors distort the image of the past in order to make political, social and moral points, it is imperative that you clearly remember your Greek and Roman history. If it has been a year or so since you took these classes, you should plan to reread your old texts and notes.

For those with only one semester of Greek or Roman History, you should plan to devote a considerable period of time studying the actual events of ancient times. you will be expected to be conversant with not only the political framework of antiquity, but also with the social, economic and intellectual currents which flowed through the ancient world.

This is the senior seminar for History majors. You will assemble a portfolio of your work and to submit itfor a final evaluation. In addition, students will write and orally present a historiographic paper about one of the historians we read. Students will be asked to demonstrate their ability to handle historical sources as well as the secondary literature.

Portfolio guidelines may be found on the History Department Web Site: http://www.csulb.edu/colleges/cla/departments/history/docs/portfolioguidelines.doc
