Notes
Midas, the king of Pessinus, tried to marry his daughter to Attis, but Agdestis out of 
jealousy drove the wedding guests mad; Attis castrated himself and died.  Where his 
blood flowed on the ground, violets grew.  The bride's name, according to Valerius the 
pontifex, was Ia; Ia mourned Attis, and killed herself; violets also grew from her blood.
