All entities can be searched for by name. Some entities have on their entry other data that can be searched for, including titles, geographical data, a short biographical description, and NEW what the names mean in Greek. Enter names either in all lower case, or in initial letter upper case. Do not enter words with more than one upper case letter. For example, cadmus or Cadmus, not CADMUS. Boolean searches are supported. To search for a phrase, enclose the phrase in quotation marks. For example, to search for the meanings of the Greek names, search for "in Greek" Do not use apostrophes or other punctuation such as quotation marks around one word. For example, do NOT enter "Cadmus" and include either " Use the wildcard * for endings: For example, Cadm* instead of Cadmos. Use the wildcard * for beginnings: For example, *gyptus will return results for both Aegyptus and Egyptus. *gypt* will return results for Aegyptus, Aigyptos, Egypt, and Egyptus. Avoid common words. For example, if you enter the word Sources, you will get every single page with the word Sources on it. All 3,300 of them. The page for each entity includes (if known) the names of the parents as links to their pages, the names of the siblings of the entity as links, the names of the children of the entity as links, a link to the Source File for the entity, and a brief biography. To find the son or daughter of a known entity, search for the parent by name and click on the name of the child in the list of children for this entity. |
Frequently it is easier to scan the Alphabetic List of names than to search. To access the Alphabetic List, click on the letter of the alphabet with which the name you are looking for begins. If your desired name is not there, look at the suggestions for alternative spellings. These suggestions are useful both for the search function and for finding a name in the lists. The primary name used in the entry is the most commonly used name. For example, Jocasta instead of Iocaste, Ajax instead of Aias, Cadmus instead of Kadmos. Many but not all alternative spellings are in the entry for the individual and can be found with the search.
Some of the alternative spellings have separate entries linked to the more commonly recognized spelling.
For example, Iocaste will direct you to Jocasta. The spellings in the source files for each individual come from the particular translation that was used and consequently may be different in citations from different sources. The title on the source file will be the most commonly used spelling. If you don't find what you're looking for, try this:
Try these substitutions, especially at the beginning of the name. |
