More supervisors

Earlier this
session, we supported the efforts of a term limits initiative
for members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
With hundreds of thousands of signatures collected,
the initiative looked like it was ready for the ballot.
Unfortunately,
the county Registrar-Recorder's office voided the effort.
Too many
sampled signatures were duplicates, illegible or had
invalid addresses. The supervisors, often labeled the
"five little kings" because of the power and
influence they hold, get to sit on their thrones a little
longer.
Despite the
invalidated signatures, the sheer number of people who
signed the petitions indicates that Los Angeles County
residents desire term limits for county supervisors.
A restarted effort, this time with better signature
gathering, is almost certain.
Meanwhile,
another modification to the Board of Supervisors is
valid.
Pushed by
lame-duck state Sen. Richard Polanco D-Los Angeles,
who has his eyes on a supervisorial seat when he is
termed out of the state senate, the measure will expand
the board from five members to nine.
Voters have
rejected previous expansion efforts, leery of making
the "five little kings" nine smaller princes.
We agree.
That's not the board's problem. Career politicians are,
and we don't need more.
