Plenty of good eats just around the corner

By Priscilla Gutierrez

Following a night out with friends, senior Anthony Caraveo said he most likely will be found having a bite to eat at the Shore House Café, 5271 E. Second St.

When he first moved here to attend Cal State Long Beach, he did not know anybody and did not know anything about Long Beach. He had no clue where to go for fun or where to go to eat.

"I'm not much of a cook," Caraveo said, "So I went around trying different restaurants until I found ones that I liked."

Caraveo said that he has been living in Long Beach for two years now and has established his own list of favorite restaurants including the Shore House Café.

Those who do not care to go all the way to Second Street for a meal can enjoy eating at the variety of restaurants located within one mile from campus.

If one is in the mood for an Italian meal, Buon Gusto Trattoria, 5755 E. Pacific Coast Highway, is only a block away from campus.

It is open on Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.   Many CSULB students and faculty go to Buon Gusto Trattoria to enjoy its wide variety of Italian dishes, according to owner Peter Kourkoulis.

"Our food is affordable and fresh," said Kourkoulis, "We have the best Italian food around."

For those who simply want to eat pizza, Ecco's Pizza, 2123 N. Bellflower, and Pizzamania, 1785 Palo Verde Ave., are located very close to campus as well.

Mexican food lovers can enjoy a meal at Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, 2092 N. Bellflower, Mexican Affair Restaurant, 5630 E. Pacific Coast Highway, or Pancho's Mexican Buffet, 4925 E. Pacific Coast Highway.

Fish Tail, 5506 E Britton Drive, serves a variety of seafood dishes as well as other foods, according to Assistant Manager Eric Penner.  It is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

"We have an excellent selection of fish and a nice atmosphere," Penner said.

The Chinese food at Pick Up Stix, 2090 N. Bellflower, attracts many CSULB students, according to General Manager Mike Gaskill.  It is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Students who love a good barbecue, might enjoy Papa's Western Barbecue, 5305 E. Pacific Coast Highway. Its food is cooked in its own juices with no artificial sauce added, said Owner Louie Leppo.

Suzy's Corner, 5096 E. Pacific Coast Highway, offers a variety of sandwiches and espresso for breakfast and lunch from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  People are able to create their own sandwiches from their everyday fresh bread and sliced meat, according to the owner.

If one is looking for casual dining and mainly American food, Blueberry Hill, 5735 E. Pacific Coast Highway, is located a block away from campus.  It is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily.

Tiny Naylors, 1760 N. Bellflower, and Hof's Hut, 2147 N. Bellflower, serve a variety of American food among other dishes as well.
