July 7 --
Former Cal State Long Beach women's volleyball team
legend Misty May is playing in the Seal Beach Open BVA
(Beach Vollyball America) women's volleyball tournament
this weekend at the Seal Beach Pier.
Rick Schloss,
the public relations director for the Beach Volleyball
America tour, confirmed May would be playing Saturday
in the tournament.
May, with
partner Holly McPeak, is attempting to grab one of two
U.S. positions in women's team volleyball for the Summer
Olympics in Sydney.
The tournament,
however, is unaffiliated with Olympic qualifying.
May and McPeak
are currently ranked third in the United States and
seeded fourth in the tournament.
Annett Davis
and Jenny Johnson Jordan, who are the No. 1 team in
the U.S. and the second ranked team in the world, are
the top seeded team.
May and McPeak
will play their first match Saturday at 11 a.m.
A 32-team
qualification tournament will start today's action at
9 a.m. on Friday until 5 p.m. The top eight teams from
Friday's action will then advance to join 16 seeded
teams in Saturday's championship bracket.
Saturday's
games also run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Sunday, the
action begins at 9 a.m. with the finals taking place
at 2:30 p.m.
There is
no charge to watch the tournament.
