Sixteen recent Cal State Long Beach graduates have been initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the university announced.

The honor society, generally considered the nation's most prestigious, also awarded three scholarships.

Kathryn Gainey of Lakewood, who is bound for Harvard Law School, received the first $5,000 Roberta H. Markman Phi Beta Kappa Award.

Tobias Dean Halvarson of La Mirada, who will be studying law at UC Berkeley, received a $2,200 scholarship. Shaina Wogsberg of Long Beach, who is planning to do post-graduate work in biology, received a $1,000 award.

Other inductees include Long Beach-area residents Mary Rose Villanueva Gahon, Rosemary Alice Joy Hulce, Alisa Stern, Kari Lin Tyler, Leanne Mary Gamble and Susy Jo'An Zepeda.

Also inducted were Flavio Acosta III of Downey, Carlos Fernando Castillo of Torrance, Joanna Marie Gonsalvez of La Mirada, Melissa April Winham of Temple City, Jennifer Nicole Bailly of Huntington Beach, Allison Du Rose Pettis of Westminster and Wajeeh Maysara Saadi of Fountain Valley.
