The history behind Ireland's religious legends came to life Friday as the Women's Resource Center recreated folk tales associated with Brigit, the Irish goddess and saint, at the University Student Union.

With the sounds of Celtic ballads in the background, the spiritual performance tried to capture the atmosphere of a period when goddesses ruled the land.

"The performance was very moving," liberal arts major Norma Reyes said. "I was so enthralled by the music that it seemed I was being transported to a different period of time."

Created by the Lipushau performance company, the mostly female production explored Brigit's life from when she was first declared a goddess to when she became a nun and founded four monasteries in Ireland.

According to folklore, Brigit, who became a powerful leader in the Catholic religion, brought widespread peace back to Ireland. Legends describe her spirit being everywhere, in the land and in all the people.
