Even with two starters recovering from the flu, the Long Beach State men's volleyball team still managed to defeat La Verne at The Pyramid Wednesday night.

Outside hitter Jim Polster and captain of the team, Matt Prosser, both sat out the game recuperating.

The 49ers won the match 15-13, 15-13, 15-11 in front of 502, improving the team's record to 6-0.

Neil Mason led the Beach in kills again, this time with a career high 28. Setter Chris Seiffert had 68 assists and 13 digs, and outside hitter Scott Faber completed a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

The 49ers had a .291 to .243 advantage over the Leopards in hitting percentage.

A 14-10 Long Beach State lead in the first game turned into an even closer 15-13 win, with the second game yielding the same results.

La Verne gave the 49ers a little more breathing room in the third game as the Beach pulled out the 15-11 victory that closed out the match.

Mason's .412 hitting percentage led the Beach to victories in all three games.

The 49ers face second-ranked Pepperdine Saturday at 7 p.m. in The Pyramid.
