From cultural to Greek clubs, students were able to check out plenty of organizations at Cal State Long Beach on Tuesday as Week of Welcome 1999 kicked off with an Organization Fair on Friendship Walk.
Presented by the Associated Students Inc., the fair featured clubs like the Philipino American Coalition and organizations of all flavors.
"We're here to tell people about PAC," Philipino Cultural Night coordinator Marie C. Metran said. "It's open to everybody,"
Metran was just one of the many new students at CSULB who was intrigued by the student participation at Welcome Week.
"We've never been to this," she said. "It's interesting seeing a lot of different people."
Every club, organization or association showed its unique characteristics by using colorful signs and displays.
The Water Ski Club chose to use a Master Craft boat to attract attention as students passed by. Like other groups, Water Ski Club was there to talk to people and give information about the club.
Large Greek letters stood proudly by various fraternities and sororities as well as traditional trophies, banners and paddles.
Organizations like PAC and Alpha Kappa Alpha hoped students' lunch-time hunger would attract bigger crowds to the event.
Around the Associated Students Inc. table, numerous music samples, CDs, bumper stickers and flyers were on display.
Loud shouts of "Are you giving out CDs," or "Hey, what do you have there for free," could be heard from students at the Nugget.
The radio station STAR 98.7 also made its mark on campus as its promoters Bridget Sullivan and Matt Wood gave out stickers, keychains, and CDs.
Festivities also included a live concert in the USU South Plaza where students listened and danced to some authentic salsa music. Performing from noon to 1 p.m., the Figuero Salsa Band could be heard from most everywhere on campus
"It's great," CSULB junior Sameer Aggarwal said. "It's nice how they incorporate the solos."
Welcome Week continues today with a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m..
The ska band "Hepcat" will perform at the South Plaza from noon
to 1 p.m..
