In my last column of the semester, I'd like to say goodbye to our students who will be moving on after graduating this month. I know there are wonderful and thrilling moments in store for you as you begin or continue your exciting professional careers. I will miss you!
Amidst all the exhilarating activities and festivities occurring this month in preparation for commencement ceremonies and final exams, a very special awards celebration was held this week to honor our distinguished faculty.
Congratulations to Dr. Sharon Sievers in the department of history for receiving this year's nomination as Outstanding Professor. Professor Clorinda Donato in the department of Romance, German, Russian languages and literature ands Professor Tim Plax in communications studies both received scholarly and creative activity awards.
Distinguished teaching awards went to Tracy Maples in computer engineering and computer science, Elizabeth Ortiz in social work, Julie Van Camp in philosophy and MaryEllen Vogt in teacher education. This is why you have often heard me say that faculty are my heroes.
I have tremendous admiration and respect for these dedicated men and women, who love to teach and help our students develop their skills and knowledge.
A final congratulations goes out to Sgt. Bonnie Myers, who received the Outstanding Staff Award for 1999. Sgt. Myers is just typical of the intelligent and enthusiastic staff who make this place run so smoothly day after day.
I want to add my warmest congratulations to the public relations students for receiving top awards for their performance in the Bateman Case Study Competition under the very able direction of Professor Emma Daugherty.
Students Tricia Arcelona, Kristi Brezden, Mairim Martinez, Ricca Silverio, and Amy Beth Stevens helped the public relations program earn a top national ranking.
This is a wonderful tribute to their extraordinary presentation skills and hard work in helping school children in our community. And also, best wishes on their trip to Washington, D.C. for another successful competition later this month.
Congratulations again to the Men's 49er Volleyball team, our NCAA championship runner-up squad, for finishing No. 2 in the nation.
Our 49ers had a terrific season and promise to give all of us even more exciting performances next year.
I look forward to seeing all of you during commencement ceremonies. Good luck on your final exams.
