Job Faire draws students, recruiters

With graduation day right around the corner, those lucky Cal State Long Beach students who will be graduating will start a journey into the work force.

The first taste of this reality came Wednesday at the Job Faire in front of the fountain area of Brotman Hall. More than 100 booths manned by potential employers clogged the walkway down to the parking structure.

Pepsi, Mervyns, Allstate Insurance and Pacific Bell were just some of the larger companies that were represented at the faire. There were also opportunities to talk to employers from U.S. Immigration and Naturalization, Los Angeles Fire Department, and the San Diego Police Department.

John Hitch, a CSULB economics major, was among the many graduating seniors handing out resumes.

"I am a little bit nervous about graduating. I have no idea what I want to do," Hitch said.

In addition to internships, many companies were offering both part-time and full-time positions.

"We are looking to hire graduating seniors. With the rate that our company is expanding, job fairs are a good way to look for good new people," said Dawn Quach, a WMA Securities representative.

Student Advantage representative Renee Westerhout was looking to fill a marketing position at her company.

While many students were dressed in shirts and ties and had their job interview game face on, others were there just to look.

"I don't graduate until next May, but I just came out here because it's an easy way to meet many employers because they are all in one place," said Matt Valentine, a computer engineering major.
