Hard work paid off for Long Beach State's track and field member Wil Moore last weekend when he who received the athlete of the meet award at the CAL-Nevada Championships in San Diego.
Moore's first place performance in the 400-meter hurdles earned him the award and placed him second on CSULB all-time list. His 50.79 time was also an NCAA national qualifying time.
"It's a great honor for Wil and also a great accomplishment for his hard work," said track coach Andy Sythe. "[CSULB sprinter] Lewis Young recorded a time of 46.02 in the 400-meters last weekend, and also qualified for the NCAA nationals."
CSULB track member Monica MacManus also performed strong last weekend, placing in the 3,000 and 5,000-meters, which qualified her for the nationals as well.
"Monica has great consistency and she scored [points] in 3,000 and 5,000 last Saturday," Sythe said. "She gives us balance in the distance races, which places us to be a championship team."
Several CSULB athletes have been invited to participate in the NCAA National Championships on June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho. They are: Jon O'Neil for discus; Marion Reneau for hepthalon; and Leslie Smith and Borya Celentano for pole vault.
"This week is a light load for us in preparation for the conference championships on May 19-20," Sythe said. "But we do expect great performances from each person."
The next team meet, the UCI Invitational, will be held from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. on Saturday in Irvine.
