One of Cal State Long Beach's very own will sing the national anthem at the Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium for CSULB's Dodger Night on Wednesday night.
Zanaida Stewart, a second-year student at CSULB, was chosen to sing the national anthem for Dodger Night by a steering committee consisting of staff and faculty from CSULB, according to Barbara Parks from the Publications Office.
The Dodgers organization selected Stewart, a Dean's Scholar for Distinction in the Arts, to sing the national anthem for Dodger Night upon the CSULB's steering committee's recommendation.
Although Stewart has sung the national anthem publicly before, Dodger Night will be the largest crowd she has ever sung the song for, said Stewart in a press release from the Office of Public Affairs.
Stewart did not return phone calls for comment.
Stewart was the first CSULB recipient of the Dean's Scholar for Distinction in the Arts this year.
According to a press release from the Office of Public Affairs, Stewart was chosen for
the reward from a group of 33 students who earned the highest scores on the National Arts Recognition and Talent Search.
Stewart said that she is excited to sing for such a large crowd Wednesday night and feels honored to sing the national anthem for CSULB's Dodger Night, according to the press release.
Stewart was also named one of KCET's "Emerging Young Black Artists" in 1997. Along with singing, Stewart also plays the piano and flute.
During the pregame ceremony, the Dodgers will honor CSULB's 50th anniversary. The CSULB's women's volleyball team will also be introduced during the ceremony.
President Robert C. Maxson will throw out the first pitch during the pregame ceremony. Current Associated Students Inc. President Christy Zamani will also be present..
The pregame ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. and the Dodger's game against
the Atlanta Braves will start at 7:35 p.m.
