Lots renamed with numbers

Lower Campus parking lots will have new names beginning Aug. 24, said Val LiHang, coordinator of the Campus Events Office.

Numbers will replace letters for the names of Lower Campus parking lots to avoid misunderstanding about the Cal State Long Beach parking-lot system.

Since 1976, Upper Campus parking lots have been labeled with numbers, and most Lower Campus lots have been labeled with letters, LiHang said.

The parking-lot signs have been installed already, LiHang said. Each sign gives a parking lot's new name and its former name, which is in parentheses.

Parking lots for students, faculty, staff and visitors will remain in the same places despite the change in the parking-lot names, LiHang said.

Some parking lots on Lower Campus have been divided and given new names, a Parking and Transportation Services pamphlet reported.

New and returning CSULB students have been mailed letters informing them of the changes, LiHang said.

To further make students aware of the changes, official campus maps will be posted on walls in the University Bookstore and the University Library.

Campus maps in CSULB folders and the CSULB Catalog do not reflect the changes made to the parking lots' names, said Fred Neely, director of the Bookstore.

If students park in the wrong lot because of the changes in the parking-lot names, they will not be excused from receiving a parking citation, said Alan Moore, field service operations manager for Parking and Transportation Services. Decisions to excuse students from receiving citations will be made on a case-by-case basis.

It is the most difficult to find a parking spot between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. during the first week, Moore said.

Parking and Transportation Services offers these suggestions to avoid parking problems:

· Get a carpool tag. It's free.

· Use the free campus shuttles that visit parking lots every 10 minutes.

· Park in the Parking Structure or Lots 11, 12, 13 and 14. There are many empty parking spots in those places.
