Cal State Long Beach Student Health Services is being remodeled this summer after last winter's El Nino storms caused major damage to the roof and inside the facility.
The roof had been leaking throughout the rainy season, said Renee Twigg, director of Student Health Services. During the remodeling asbestos abatement of the building will also be done.
''We will move into a building that will have a new roof and will have the asbestos removed from the entire building,'' Twigg said. ''We expect to be up and running by Aug. 10."
Health Services have temporarily relocated to PE-86, the Athletic Training Room, during the remodeling.
A private moving company and campus employees transferred the equipment to the temporary center. All the extra furniture was stored in a public storage for the two months needed for the remodeling, Twigg said.
The temporary center is offering full services except for x-rays, but accommodations have been made with a local private clinic for emergencies. For normal x-rays for people without an injury, students can go to Cal State Fullerton or Cal State Los Angeles, Twigg said.
The remodeling will also include adding two handicap bathrooms and moving the pharmacy across the hall to make more room for the pharmacist to do individual patient counseling, Twigg said.
The health education area will be changed into a health promotion center with computers where students can access health information, Twigg said.
Health Services has also added a new computer system.
"This new system will allow Health Services to convert to a true electronic medical record system,'' said Gabriel Wilson, network analyst Student Health Services.
Student Services is expected to re-open Aug. 10 and remodeling will continue throughout the fall semester, but this won't interfere with the centers' services, Twigg said.
