New improved Coast

Cal State Long Beach will soon be replacing its current online catalog and circulation system, known as Coast, with a new and improved system.

In early July students from work, home or school will be able to access this new system through the use of the Internet and a Web browser.

The current system of Coast has been in use since '88 and will no longer be supported by its manufacturer. The system was too expensive to maintain, thus forcing the library to replace it with a new and improved Coast, said Henry DuBois, library acting associate dean.

The old Coast system does not have as many of the features as the revised system, DuBois said.

The new and improved version of Coast is graphics based and much easier to use, DuBois said. Search is done by a simple click and point of a mouse.

With the new system students will be able to find books, journals, reserve material, media items, government documents and videos in CSULB's library collections and at other libraries, DuBois said.

Students will find our new Coast catalog very user-friendly and will discover that they can do much more than they could ever do on the old system, DuBois said.

Money for the new Coast came from a combination of state money and form the annual budget given to the library for special projects, said Gretchen Johnson, associate dean of library services.
