Cal State Long Beach hosts CSU Summer Arts, an internationally recognized festival of dance, film and video, music, poetry and theater, featuring student and professional work from June 28 to July 25 on campus.
According to Mark Jocson, Summer Arts' publicity manager, the CSU Summer Arts Festival is "a culmination of academia and performance," providing students with professionally taught upper and graduate level classes and workshops, not offered by CSU system. Students may enroll in one of 16 two to three week intensive courses for full semester credits and the opportunity to perform their art before a public audience during the festival's "Student Culmination Series" scheduled July 10 to July 25.
The kick-off of CSU Arts will be a three day Media Arts Festival, scheduled June 28 to 30, which among other activities, competitions and presentations, will recognize actor Edward James Olmos for his contributions to entertainment and education.
Throughout the summer, other guests included are Bebe Miller Dance Company; The San Francisco Mime Troupe; clown duo, Mump and Smoot; director, Howard Ritter; art critic, Jack Becker; Metropolitan Opera performer, Bill Stone; and Dutch Orchestra Nieuw Ensemble.
Additional festivals and performances held in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center will include the celebrated International Ramayana Dance Festival occurring July 5 and 5 and the Bebe Miller Dance Company's performance, "Going to the Wall" Scheduled July 25.
