The year-long, heated debate over amending general education requirements was resolved at a special meeting of the Academic Senate Thursday.

The meeting drew a surprisingly small turnout for a vote that would reshape general education requirements for incoming freshmen.
The amendment states all incoming freshmen must complete a cornerstone curriculum consisting of 12 units in the English, math and critical thinking categories of the Cal State Long Beach general education requirements within their first 36 units.
Senate members voted down a proposal to discuss it further before a decision was made, feeling a decision needed to be reached before the new school year.
The Senate voted nearly unanimously to approve the amendment.
The amendment was originally proposed by CSULB faculty who felt students were not prepared for their upper division classes.
The new curriculum would ensure students would have basic English and math skills required for future coursework.
