The year-long, heated debate over amending general education requirements
was resolved at a special meeting of the Academic Senate Thursday.
-
- The meeting drew a surprisingly small turnout for a vote that would
reshape general education requirements for incoming freshmen.
- The amendment states all incoming freshmen must complete a cornerstone
curriculum consisting of 12 units in the English, math and critical thinking
categories of the Cal State Long Beach general education requirements within
their first 36 units.
- Senate members voted down a proposal to discuss it further before a
decision was made, feeling a decision needed to be reached before the new
school year.
- The Senate voted nearly unanimously to approve the amendment.
- The amendment was originally proposed by CSULB faculty who felt students
were not prepared for their upper division classes.
- The new curriculum would ensure students would have basic English and
math skills required for future coursework.
