Student expression, poetry and jazz came together to entertain a crowd of about 200 Thursday evening, with students taking the opportunity to read their poetic works on stage in the University Student Union.

"This is our second evening of poetry and jazz," event organizer Aaron Elionelech said. "Last month we had a pretty good turnout, and tonight is better. We hope to make this a monthly event because students love it. They can read their own poetry, or just relax, eat and enjoy themselves."

Sanctuary, a five-piece student band, provided the background for each reading. The music was mellow and laid-back.

"This is my first time here and I am excited to get up there. It's nice to have the opportunity to express myself in a positive atmosphere," said business and communications major Donna Newman.

Michael, graduate student in English, read three poems he wrote about cocaine addiction, back problems and school woes.

"I think it's cool," he said. "The school needs to have more places like this for students to express themselves."

The event was sponsored by the University Student Union Program Council.
