The new chancellor of the California State University system began his education at Cal State Long Beach Thursday in the president's office.

Charles Reed, named chancellor of the CSU system in October, is in the process of learning about each of the 23 campuses within the system.

In an amicable meeting of the minds, Reed received a synopsis of CSULB's makeup. President Robert Maxson served as chairman of the get-acquainted meeting, with the deans of each of CSULB's seven colleges and Associated Students Inc. President Naomi Rodriguez in attendance.

Reed was apprised of some of CSULB's accomplishments such as the dance program being in the top 10, and the business program that is one of the 10 largest in the nation.

Maxson wrapped up the meeting with an explanation of the President's Scholars Program and his mission for CSULB in creating quality programs for the campus.

In agreement with Maxson's goal, Reed said: "Smart students don't pick universities, they pick programs."

After the meeting, Reed toured the campus, making stops at The Pyramid, the University Student Union, the quad in front of the Nugget and the University Library.

"Chancellor Reed was very impressed with our campus," said Armando Contreras, executive assistant to the president. "He met many students and got a good sense of what the campus is about."

In other business, Reed is expected to address the status of the California Educational Technology Initiative at the board of trustees' meeting today and Wednesday.
