The Long Beach State softball team spent the weekend in San Diego and came back champions.
The Beach (7-3) won its second straight Cambel-Cartier Classic, hosted by San Diego State. The 49ers won the eight team tournament with a weekend record of 5-1.
After dropping the first game to Stanford Thursday, The Beach went undefeated the rest of the weekend. In the 3-1 loss to Stanford, sophomore pitcher Kristi Fox was charged with her first loss as a 49er.
The Beach went on to defeat UCLA, 3-1, later in the day. Freshman right hander Traci Hensel picked up her first of three wins. Freshman left fielder Jennifer Springer belted a home run that drove in a RBI that sealed the victory for The Beach.
In Friday's game The Beach defeated No. 4 Michigan 6-3. Hensel came into the game during the middle of the fourth inning to pick up her second win. Senior second baseman Amanda Favorite doubled in a run.
Saturday scheduled three games for The Beach. The first game matched host San Diego State against The Beach. Sophomore catcher Jaime Villones doubled twice. Hensel also picked up her third win in the 3-2 victory.
Freshman Kelly Nasrawi pitched a four hitter to pick up her first win in Saturday's second game for The Beach. The 49ers destroyed Eastern Michigan 7-1. Villones hit her third double for the weekend as Favorite nailed a triple,.
The Beach continued its dominance by defeating Santa Clara University 7-1. Senior shortstop Deidra Oliver tripled while junior center fielder Melanie Muniz and freshman third baseman doubled scoring runs.
Sunday's game with Louisiana State was canceled due to bad weather.
Three 49ers were named to the all-tournament team. Muniz batted .400 with two doubles, six runs scored, and two RBI. Villones batted .416 with three doubles and three RBI. Springer, who filled in for injured Nicola Walsh, went 6-22 and four RBI.
