Internationally recognized sculptor Eunkyoung Choi left her job as a instructor of sculpting at Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea and journeyed to the United States.
After studying in New York for a year, Choi came to Cal State Long Beach.
She will display her latest works in an exhibit for the art department.
The exhibit will be a reflection of her thoughts of pain as well as the pain that she sees reflected in society, Choi said.
Choi's goal was to sculpt 10 to 12 traditional Korean water jars that are 5-feet tall. A separate sculpted mass was placed inside the jars.
This separate work was made into wings that would be an illustration of both hurt and salvation.
The exhibit will open May 16 in both the Dance Pavilion on East Campus Drive and the ceramics gallery in FA2 and continue through May 23.
At the height of Choi's art career, she was involved in a life threatening car accident and realized that fame and fortune was not a priority in her life anymore.
"My big wish is to talk about the hurt, so I can feel alive," Choi said, "I realized that I couldn't waste any time. I wanted to put all my energy into art and live in my own way - to be happy."
