The White House summoned Cal State Long Beach student Angela Aguayo to arrive at1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on May 14.

Aguayo was selected to be a part of the summer internship program in Washington, D.C.

"I did not think that I had a chance of getting in," said Aguayo, a speech communications major. "I was totally amazed."

She was one of 400 students nationwide chosen for the program. More than 1,000 applications were submitted.

White House representative Madge Henning said that internships were awarded based on the candidates' essay submissions, transcripts and letters of recommendation.

"We look at grades, academic interest, community service and work history," Henning said.

Aguayo will be placed in an office selected from her top four choices: speech writing, the Office of the First Lady, domestic policy and the Department on Women's Issues.

"Just to be able to dialogue with [the office staff] will be a learning experience," Aguayo said.

The first of her family to go to college, Aguayo said she hopes to work in the political arena as a speech writer or a lobbyist.

Aguayo was surprised that she was selected to be a part of the White House internship program.

"I'm just waiting for them to call me and say it was a joke," Aguayo said.
